Furniture-enthusiasts can find countless reasons to celebrate Amish furniture: for its sturdy construction, its timeless styles and classic designs, its practical use, its custom options, even the hand-on service that comes when working with the Amish. One of the most exciting qualities of Amish furniture, one that thrills furniture-lovers and furniture-novices alike, are custom furniture pieces.

Custom furniture pieces allow one the possibility of owning an entirely original work, one that has never been created before. Often, these custom pieces are derived or inspired by well-known designs (such as the Shaker or Mission styles), but sometimes these pieces will feature entirely new designs that have not been seen.

Its all in the Scroll: the Sleigh Style

December 27th, 2010   by :

In the world of Amish-furniture, there are a number of styles that garner most of the attention–the Shaker, MissionĀ  and Queen Anne. These styles have earned decades, even centuries, of public interest and appeal. Yet, one popular style that is often overlooked is the sleigh style. Noted for its “scrolled” feet and headboard (in the case of beds), the sleigh style is named for its semblance to traditional snow sleighs.

The Legacy of Maple Wood and the Hudson Bed

December 23rd, 2010   by :

In previous blogs, we’ve looked at Cherry, Elm and Hickory woods as examples of common woods used in furniture craftsmanship. Each wood has a distinct composition and style. Cherry has a dense texture and varies in color, Elm has a smooth, interlocking grain and Hickory often utilizes rustic, natural bark accents. In this blog, our focus is on Maple wood.

Hudson Bed

Solid Maple wood construction and a rich finish highlights the Hudson Bed.

A diverse, practical wood, Maple is used for bowling pins and the official MLB baseball bats. Noted for its hard, close grains, Maple is categorized by craftsmen into categories of “hard” and “soft” Maple. While “hard” Maple composes bowling pins and baseball bats, “soft” Maple (also called “Brown Maple” by furniture craftsmen) is used for furniture construction. Maple wood is also noted for its wonderful acoustic properties, making it a wonderful choice for hollow-bodied or resonant musical instruments such as drum shells and guitars.

Maple enjoys a rich legacy as a major furniture wood and boasts a timeless beauty. Visit Brandenberry Amish Furniture to see our huge selection of Maple furniture!

Those who truly appreciate the value of hand-crafted, solid wood furniture know that such pieces enjoy timeless beauty, durability and a variety of custom options. Yet such pieces are an investment, and are worth the effort in protecting them from scratches, dings, dents, scars, stains and warps. Thankfully, Amish craftsmen provide a variety of practical guidelines for taking care of your wood furnishings, such as the fine dining table pad.

The table pad uses a patented locking system to secure a 3/8 or 1/2 inch protective surface to the top of any table. The top surface of the pad can be customized to match any table, while the bottom surface features a soft cushioning system.

Using the table pad has many advantages:

Enjoying the Beauty of Natural Cherry Furniture

December 3rd, 2010   by :

For those enamored with solid wood construction, a detailed understanding of the unique qualities of various woods may be second nature. But for those without a deep understanding of the inherent qualities of each wood species used in furniture construction, we will look here at cherry wood furniture.

Cherry is classified as a hardwood with a dense texture and a distinct grain pattern, though it is softer than maple wood. Cherry varies on color depending on the species of tree (from light, medium to dark colors) and may even vary within a particular piece of wood, though color inconsistencies can be evened out with proper stain and dyeing techniques, if desired (To see the diversity of cherry wood coloration, click here). Cherry furniture also may darken in color with age which makes it a desirable wood.
