Comments Off on A Fresh Perspective on Shaker Style Furniture
Shaker Style furniture had its humble beginnings in the pious Shaker religious community in the northeastern region of the United States. Since then, Shaker style furniture has grown in popularity. And, today, its iconic design features have become part of the world of wood furniture. Since the 19th Century, countless furniture styles have come and gone. But Shaker furniture remains virtually unchanged. In fact, it’s more popular today than ever before.
So what accounts for Shaker’s timeless appeal? The answer is simple: the Shaker style charms furniture lovers with its graceful blend of function, style and durability.
The Shaker design is functional. You won’t find exaggerated curves, superfluous panels or intricately-carved accents. Rather, Shaker furniture focuses on a stately design that emphasizes practicality and comfort.
The Shaker design is stylish. Subtle curves and straight angles converge in a design that’s both solid and graceful. In fact, the Shaker look is graceful enough to blend in with any high-end home decor. Yet, it’s humble enough to meld with mix-and-match furnishings. So the Shaker style is versatile. Truth be told, the Shaker and Mission styles have become the iconic face of American furniture today.
Also, the Shaker design is durable. The original Shaker craftsmen built solid wood chairs. And these basic, well crafted chairs provided comfortable, durable seating for their large religious gatherings. Also, this sturdy construction results in pieces that are destined to become treasured heirlooms. And today, Amish artisans keep alive the dedication to quality construction that the original Shaker craftsmen embraced. Paradoxically enough, today’s Amish craftsmen use traditional woodworking techniques handed down from their Anabaptist ancestors in Switzerland and Germany.

Comments Off on A Look At Cabin Furniture
Cabin Furniture has outgrown its place as suitable only for cabins and lodges, but has been welcomed into the home by furniture-enthusiasts who recognize its beauty and dynamic style. The popularity of Cabin furniture flourished in the early twentieth century as an economic downturn and the popularity of Mission and wicker furniture led people toward a rustic, practical taste in furniture.
While home furnishings crafted of synthetic materials offer an affordable option to those seeking furniture, home furnishings crafted of solid wood continue to appeal to those interested in natural beauty. Cabin furniture is noted for its natural characteristics, including bark accents, knots and warps, all which add charm and rustic beauty.
The one-of-a-kind look of cabin furniture can be attributed to its rough-hewn wood construction, bark accents and simple designs. Cabin furniture boasts great versatility. It can add a rustic touch to any home, cabin or patio. It possesses not only a unique style, but strength and durability.

Comments Off on A Short History of Wood Furniture: Vintage Furniture
Vintage furniture, by definition, are furnishings that are too old to be considered “used furniture” but too recent to be considered antique. While there are few retailers that specifically deal in vintage furniture, this style always grabbed the imaginations of furniture enthusiasts.
During the 1920’s, American furniture craftsmen began to experiment with diverse styles, incorporating designs from the French “Art Nouveau” school of design, the British “Arts and Crafts Movement”, traditional Japanese styles (popularized by Frank Lloyd Wright), and the Spanish Mission architecture of the American West.
For the curious observer, there is a wealth of informative material available online to serve as a historical background in the field of handcrafted furnishings and as a guide in recognizing vintage or antique furnishings. To learn more about vintage furniture, look into furniture retailers online and inquire about custom furniture and creating Vintage Furniture pieces.

Comments Off on All in the Scroll: The Sleigh Style
If you’re like most furniture shoppers, you like choosing a style that elicits positive vibes about another place, time or experience. That’s we go for styles like Shaker, Mission and Victorian. Yet, here’s one popular style that’s often overlooked. And it’s All in the Scroll: The Sleigh Style.
The Sleigh Style is named for its semblance to traditional snow sleighs. This explains its rounded top, graceful lines, scrolled feet and bold, assertive look. In the world of Amish furniture, this style is gaining popularity like never before.
All in the Scroll: The Sleigh Style
A remarkable feature about the Sleigh Style is the way in which Amish designers intersperse the rounded theme with flat panels throughout the piece. For example, the ‘scroll’ takes the form of the crown molding at the top of pieces like the bookcase, wall unit and entertainment center (see photo). Then, it reappears as the rounded front panel for the drawer in consoles, cabinets, dressers and tables. Also, Amish cabinetmakers integrate the scroll into the feet of each piece.
Sleigh Style Bedroom: Like Sleeping on a Sleigh
Brandenberry Amish Furniture, Shipshewana, Indiana, offers Sleigh Style furniture for every room in your home. Their sleigh beds are the most common furnishing featuring the sleigh style. Who wouldn’t want to fall asleep with pleasant thoughts of a sleigh ride? Other pieces in the Sleigh Style bedroom collection includes chests, dressers and nightstands. Plus armoires, wardrobes, chifferobes and floor mirrors.
Sleigh Style Entertainment: Reminiscent of Good Times
Perhaps no item of furniture showcases the unique features of Old Classic Sleigh furniture like its entertainment pieces. Take the five-piece wall unit. Its Amish builders integrate the sleigh-like curve into its majestic bridge, wide shelf above the TV, flanking cabinets and distinctive base. Also, other pieces of entertainment furniture bear the sophisticated sleigh look. Pieces like the two-piece LCD cabinet, the corner hutch and TV consoles.
Sleigh Style Living Room: Timeless Beauty
Decking out your living room with Old Classic Sleigh occasional furniture is like surrounding yourself with timeless beauty and sophistication. Living room furniture includes coffee tables, end tables and sofa tables. Bookcases by Old Classic Sleigh perfectly complement the occasional table pieces.

Comments Off on Amish Furniture – A Brief History
The roots of Amish furniture in America reach way back to 17th Century Switzerland. In 1693, a schism developed between the Anabaptists and a group within the church led by Jacob Ammann. The Anabaptists are the forerunners of the Mennonite Church. Ammann’s followers became known as Amish. Amish Furniture – A Brief History fills in the blanks between the Amish European roots and their furniture-building expertise in America.
Amish Resist Modern Conveniences
Many of the Anabaptists largely adopted to the norms of society around them. But the Amish retained a separate identity. They embodied the principles of simple living and plain dress. Also, they resisted many conveniences of modern technology.
The Anabaptist groups were severely persecuted in Europe. So many fled to the mountains of Switzerland and southern Germany. And the early Amish started the traditions of farming and holding worship services in homes rather than churches.
Amish Furniture – A Brief History
Later, many of the Amish and Mennonites accepted William Penn’s offer of religious freedom. So they settled in present-day Pennsylvania in the early 18th Century. Other Amish families settled in the Midwest.
The Amish ethic of integrity, self-sufficiency and hard work guided their daily work. And this gave rise to the crafting of furniture. Then, “folk art” became popularized during the early 20th Century. And Amish-crafted furniture become highly prized by folks from all over the United States.

Comments Off on Amish Made Furniture in Shipshewana, Indiana
Amish furniture has garnered a reputation for great quality. And rightfully so. Because the Amish people are renown for their hard work, discipline and integrity. And they approach the furniture craft with the same ethic as they do life. That’s why Amish Made Furniture in Shipshewana, Indiana, has become famous for its detailed craftsmanship and practicality.
Amish Made Furniture in Shipshewana, Indiana
Located in Northern Indiana, Shipshewana is home to a small population of Amish. And the Amish people have been living here for the past two centuries. Plus, many of the furniture craftsmen learned the trade from their father and grandfather. And they, in turn, learned the trade from their ancestors.
Traditional Skills and Modern Technologies
The Amish people adhere to the pious Anabaptist faith. It’s a branch of Christianity which has its roots in the Protestant Reformation of the 16th Century. Like their ancestors, the present-day Amish people eschew ‘modern-day’ conveniences. And these include driving cars or having electricity in their homes. But Amish shops get around this by powering their tools with diesel compressors. As a result, Amish furniture represents the ultimate in cabinetmaking excellence, combined with the efficiencies and precision of modern woodworking machines.
Solid hardwood construction
Another hallmark of Amish cabinetmaking is the use of solid hardwoods. In fact, Amish cabinetmakers use hardwoods like oak, maple, cherry and hickory. Also, they use more difficult — but sturdier — techniques, like dovetail and mortise and tenon joints. What’s more, the Amish men avoid bargain substitutes like particle board and veneers, brads and staples. These elements are common in chain-store furniture.
Wide range of styles
Amish-made furniture generally features recognizable styles. They include Shaker, Mission, Traditional and Rustic designs. These classically Amish designs feature a timeless beauty that accents any home.

Comments Off on Amish Mission Recliners
The recliner has been a fixture in the home since the emergence of the La-Z-Boy in the 1950s. This is because Americans desired less formal furniture that provided comfort at an affordable price. As a result, a wide variety of recliners became available. At Brandenberry Furniture, we offer a line of custom Amish Mission Recliners.
Amish Mission Recliners
Each Mission Recliner features the classic Mission style. This style includes wood slats, clean angles and solid wood construction. Bowed arms give en elegant style and a plush back provides comfort. Mission Recliners also look good with a variety of home decorating styles.
Amish rustic furniture boasts a truly unique style that transcends time. Rustic furniture is defined by its use of natural, often raw, woods and simple designs. Rustic furniture also encompasses the styles known as “cabin furniture” and “primitive furniture”, each of which are noted for their rustic construction and natural beauty.
Rustic furniture often utilizes raw woods, sometimes featuring knots and bark accents. Other construction methods create ornate, decorative shapes from natural woods using steaming methods.
The history of rustic furniture can be traced back to the early-20th century, as the popularity of Mission-style and wicker furniture flourished and hard economic times led people to more practical, affordable furniture.
Today, Amish craftsmen craft rustic furniture the old-fashioned way, using natural indigenous hardwoods and traditional woodworking methods. Rustic furniture is crafted in a variety of styles and designs, from simple to ornate, office and dining room to living room and children’s furniture.
Comments Off on Amish Wood Furniture
One of the great strengths of Amish wood furniture is it’s solid wood construction. While many home furnishings use affordable plywood or artificial materials, Amish wood furniture utilizes indigenous hardwoods, guaranteeing that each piece will contain an inherent beauty and sturdiness.
The beauty of Amish wood furniture is due to many factors, such as expert craftsmanship and beautiful designs, but using the finest woods available brings a quality to each piece that cannot be duplicated by plywood of veneer furniture. For example, in Shipshewana, Indiana, home to a thriving Amish furniture market, indigenous woods are used in furniture construction.
As you search for the furniture piece that’s right for you, research the wood species used to construct each furnishing. Is the wood indigenous or imported? Does the piece use plywood backing or veneers?
Homeowners can attest to the challenge of finding the perfect home furnishings. How do you balance the demands of comfort, durability, price and style? Should a modern piece of furniture built of man-made materials take priority over solid wood furniture? In Avoiding the Frustrations of Buying Custom Furniture, we’ll consider some simple steps to procuring the perfect furniture for your home.
Compare and Contrast Furniture Styles and Features
If you’re looking for a new item of furniture or a furniture set — such as a bedroom set — take notes on some existing furniture you like. Then, create a list of features you’re looking for. Or, better yet, create a sketch. Also, compile your list of ‘ingredients.’ For example, your list can mention Shaker-style legs or Mission furniture slats. Or it can include fluted columns, dentil trim, or mortise and tenon joints. Then, stick to the plan. And go find your furniture!
Simply put, if you don’t find what you’re looking for, don’t settle. Always refer to the list of features you desire in a piece of furniture. Also, confer with a helpful sales representative for more information. The search may grow tiresome, even discouraging. But keep trying! Because you never know what will turn up. And if you reach a dead end, check out the next tip.
Consider Going Custom
Some retailers offer custom furniture. And Brandenberry Amish Furniture in Shipshewana, Indiana, comes to mind. Because they have a team of trained sales associates you can reach via phone or e-mail. And a team member will be delighted to review your list. They’ll also show you how you can get the furniture you really want. Also, the Brandenberry sales associate might recommend that you customize an existing piece of furniture. Or, your best option might be to create a piece from scratch.
Ordering custom furniture can be intimidating. And this is especially true since so may options will be thrown at you. But no worries. Brandenberry’s friendly sales associate will explain the process. Also, they’ll show you some previous creations, and ensure that you find exactly what you’re looking for!

Comments Off on Beauty of Elm Wood and the Mondovi Bed
Traditional Amish craftsmen use a variety of woods to craft their pieces. The usual wood choices–oak, quarter sawn white oak, cherry, maple, brown maple and sometimes, hickory–each possess unique qualities that accent each furnishing. A lesser known wood is Elm, noted for its strong, interlocking grain which results in great durability.
The Mondovi Bed, pictured here, boasts a sleek, simple design that effortlessly blends classic and modern styles. Featuring solid Grey Elm construction, the Mondovi Bed possesses great durability and a rich wood grain.
Arched raised paneling, bed size options, wood species selection and stain/paint/dye choices make this bed a perfect accent to any home.
Furniture lovers looking for a beautiful piece should consider Elm wood, not only for its strength and smooth grain, but for its unique color qualities and beauty. For more pieces like this Amish bed, visit our Brandenberry Amish Furniture store!
Comments Off on Benefits of Hardwood Furniture
There are many benefits of Hardwood Furniture, such as the furniture available from Brandenberry Amish Furniture in Shipshewana, Indiana.
Benefits of Hardwood Furniture
One of the benefits of hardwood furniture is the durability it provides. If you’ve ever admired antique furniture for its beauty and elegance, you need to ask yourself why these pieces are still around. Because they were crafted from hardwoods. That’s why!
In fact, modern wood artisans craft most, if not all, of their pieces from hardwoods. Often, they utilize indigenous hardwoods. In fact, the top Amish cabinetmakers in the Midwest handcraft the most beautiful pieces of furniture from hardwoods like maple, oak, cherry and hickory. And you can check out these pieces — thousands of them — at Brandenberry.
Take a Closer Look at Hardwoods
Research the variety of wood species, whether native or imported, that are being used to crafts some of your favorite furnishings. What are the benefits of each wood species? Does a maple piece possess a rich, warm color but lack the strength of oak? How does a traditionally cut oak piece compare to a quarter sawn white oak piece? Does a hickory furnishing add a rustic accent to a furnishing better than a rustic cherry piece?

Comments Off on Big Statement: Manhattan Mission Entertainment Center
If the best place to make a ‘big statement’ in the home is the living room, then the entertainment center has to be the primary item of furniture to turn heads. So with this motivation, Amish master cabinetmakers created a wall unit representing the ultimate in solid hardwood craftsmanship, functionality and beauty. And it’s all about making a Big Statement: Manhattan Mission Entertainment Center.
Classic Mission Style Meets Modern Design Elements
The beautiful Manhattan Mission Three-Piece Unit blends traditional craftsmanship and classic styles with modern design elements. Echoes of the classic Mission style show up in features like its simple straight-line construction, classic hardware and fine craftsmanship. While the fluted columns, elegant crown molding with a dentil border and solid hardwood construction bring out modern and timeless elements.
Big Statement: Manhattan Mission Entertainment Center
This deluxe wall unit is the entertainment center of choice for upscale home owners looking for a custom-built, highly functional entertainment center for a living room, den or home theater.
Behind the four panel doors in the console, the designers carved out space for your multi-media equipment like your stereo system. Also, you’ll find two drawers behind each of the wood panel doors in the side cabinets. They’re ideal for your DVD and CD collections. Or your old-school VHS tapes.
The drawers open full-extension for easy access to everything inside. Plus, dovetail joints enhance strength and durability. Also, the optional Blum soft-close under-mount slide makes closing the drawers a breeze.
In addition, the builders placed six adjustable shelves in the two side cabinets. Plus an adjustable shelf above the TV. So you’ll have an abundance of space for your showpiece items. Like figurines, decorative plates and keepsakes. And everything stays illuminated with the dimmable LED, warm-white touch lights in the side cabinets and at the top of the console. Also, all the doors have a soft-close feature. Gently push an open door, and it closes the rest of the way.
Options and Special Custom Features
The center console is available in four widths — from 45 1/2 to 60 1/2 inches. So you can select the size that best fits your desires and space requirements. Also, you can request bi-fold pocket doors. They block off the TV area when closed. And they retract on both sides of the TV, trimming 7 inches from the width of the TV area. Other options include your choice of wood specie, hardware and stain/paint/dye.

Comments Off on Blending Mission and Modern: The Solid Wood Empire Hutch
Amish furniture craftsmen are skilled at blending traditional and modern designs. And the Solid Wood Empire Hutch is a prime example. The first thing that meets the eye is the mullion arch in the three glass doors. And the designers echoed the arch theme in the buttress on each side of the open countertop. So the arch theme, along with the elegantly carved crown suggest a modern hutch style. Yet, one can’t help noticing the recessed doors and side panels, plus the traditional black Mission pull hardware. And these testify to the hutch’s Mission roots.
The Best of Traditional and Modern Furniture Design
But the designers made sure the Empire Hutch has all the elements sophisticated homeowners look for in a hutch. And that’s why they gave the hutch so much storage space behind the beautiful leaded glass up above. Also, the cupboard space and large drawer down below yield lots of space for silverware, china and crystal. Plus, the drawer opens full extension. So everyone gets easy access to every corner of the drawer.
Wish to customize? No problem. Amish custom furniture enthusiasts will cherish the ability to customize the hutch to their heart’s content. Options include the wood specie, finish and hardware. Buyers can also select the number of doors, type of glass and unit size, among other items.
Amish-Crafted for Beauty and Durability
Amish artisans handcraft each Solid Wood Empire Hutch. And they use solid hardwoods, like oak, cherry, maple and hickory. Plus, they integrate skills handed down from their ancestors. And this dedication to excellence results in a piece that is not only timelessly designed, but durable enough to last for generations.
Online presentations of Bradenberry furniture are great. But there is no substitute for seeing, touching, smelling – and experiencing – the furniture for yourself. That’s why you need to visit Brandenberry Amish Furniture in Shipshewana, Indiana. And among the many experiences Shipshewana has to offer – like Amish farms, Amish food and flea markets – the most solid is your visit to Brandenberry Amish Furniture.
Comments Off on Boulder Creek Lift Top Coffee Table: Tradition Meets Innovation
Brandenberry Amish Furniture has earned a reputation for mixing tradition with innovation, and the Boulder Creek Lift Top Coffee Table is a prime example. It’s a beautifully crafted item of living room furniture that’s rooted in the Mission tradition. But the Boulder Creek line adds distinctly modern design accents.
So what makes this line of furniture and the Boulder Creek Coffee Table with Lift Top so appealing? Three top reasons come to mind.
First, designers base the Boulder Creek line on the classic Mission style popularized in American furniture in the early 20th century. However, the designers added gently curved legs, ebony inlays and arched skirts. And with that, they created the Boulder Creek Collection. So furniture enthusiasts will agree that this contemporary look adds a touch of warmth and classic style to any living room or den.
Second, a variety of custom options allow customers to create the coffee table to their liking. For example, customers can choose the wood species. And these include oak, maple, cherry and hickory. Also fine furniture enthusiasts can select the stain or finish and hardware. Plus other choices.
Third, the lift-top mechanism allows the coffee table to function as a dining table/work and play station rolled into one. Just raise the 1-inch-thick, solid wood top. Then, pull it forward. And the lift top is ready to be used as a snack table or platform for your favorite device.
But lots of cool features lie below the lift top. For starters, the builders carved out a 3 1/4 inch storage area below. And it’s great for living room accouterments like remotes and magazines. Also, customers will find lots more storage space — and an adjustable shelf — behind the doors.
Boulder Creek Lift Top Coffee Table part of Collection
Finally, customers can complement the Boulder Creek Lift Top Coffee Table with other pieces of occasional furniture in the Boulder Creek Collection. And these pieces include end tables and sofa tables. Also, the Boulder Creek Collection includes media stands and cabinets, bookcases and home office furniture.

Comments Off on Buying Amish Bedroom Furniture
Buying new bedroom furniture can be a daunting experience. This is particularly true since there are so many types of bedroom furniture available. Also, numerous online and ‘brick and mortar’ stores sell bedroom furniture. But if you’re interested in top-quality, solid hardwood furniture, your best source is custom Amish furniture. So here are some key questions you need to consider in Buying Amish Bedroom Furniture:
Space: How Big is Your Bedroom?
1. Have you measured the space in your room? Does it allow for just a bed and nightstand or an entire bedroom set?
2. Is one nightstand sufficient or will you need a nightstand on either side of your bed?
3. Does the bedroom come with storage, such as a walk-in closet?
There are several storage solutions for bedrooms with little or no walk-in closets, as you’ll see below.
Furnishings: What Pieces Do You Want/Need?
Great. You’re written down the dimensions of your bedroom. Now you need to consider what pieces you want.
4. Will a dressing table, mirror and chair be required?
5. Do you need a chest or dresser with lots of storage space in the drawers, or does a chest with a standard height and depth suffice?
6. Does an armoire with a clothes hanger rod, shelves or an entertainment compartment fit your needs?
7. Do you need a blanket chest or cedar chest to store blankets, keepsakes and the like?
8. Will a full-size bed be large enough? Or do you prefer a queen or king-size bed?
Décor and Style: What Look Are You Going For?
9. Have you considered pieces like a lingerie chest, jewelry armoire and cheval mirror? Since these occupy floor space, they need to be considered in how you design your floorplan.
10. Do you have a preference for furniture style (such as Mission, Shaker, Rustic or Modern)? This is important, since you may wish your bedroom furniture to complement furniture elsewhere in your home.
11. Do you have a wood preference and/or preference for furniture color? The most popular wood species are maple, oak, cherry and hickory. Your choice of stain/varnish affects the look of the wood. Or you may wish to have your furniture painted, such as an off-white shade. This totally obscures the actual color of the wood.
Budget: How Much are You Prepared to Spend?
12. What is your budget? Of course, your budget will determine what type, and how many furniture pieces you will buy.
Buying Amish Bedroom Furniture
How you answer the questions above will have a major impact on the bedroom set that you ultimately pick for your home. Consider answering these questions as well as other issues that are specific to your situation before you go furniture shopping. Also, gain additional insights by visiting furniture websites and furniture stores after you have answered these questions about your bedroom. Then, review your answers accordingly. Finally, make the BIG DECISION about which furnishings are right for your bedroom.

Comments Off on Cabin Furniture
Cabin furniture is marked by its traditional craftsmanship and rustic style. The one-of-a-kind look of cabin furniture can be attributed to its rough-hewn wood construction, bark accents and simple designs.
Gustav Stickley plays an important role in the history of cabin furniture. The Wisconsin-born craftsman popularized the Spanish Mission furniture style, mass-producing it for the public. To follow up this success, he produced a line of rustic cabin furniture. Its popularity caught on quickly.
Cabin furniture boasts great versatility. It can add a rustic touch to any home, cabin or patio. It possesses not only a unique style, but strength and durability.

Comments Off on Celebrating an American Original: Cabin Furniture
Rustic furniture has often been overshadowed by the classic Mission and Shaker styles or the sleek elegance of modern dining and bedroom furnishings. Yet, what other style captures the enduring beauty of solid wood furniture than the rustic furniture style? So let’s explore this trend in Celebrating an American Original: Cabin Furniture.

Comments Off on Centennial Three Door Entertainment Makes Debut
Popular for more than a century, the Mission furniture style owes its origins to simplistic, but alluring furniture made in California missions in the late 19th Century. To honor the enduring popularity of Mission furniture, Brandenberry presents the Centennial Three Door Entertainment Center. The unit features a straight-angled design and simple panels. And the builders gave it a rich wood finish and black diamond hardware. Yet, this understated style displays a timeless appeal.
So how does Brandenberry integrate Mission elements into this entertainment center? The builders created recessed panels on the doors, drawers and sides. So notice also the simplistic black hardware. Plus the use of mullions in the large glass door.
Traditional Design Meets User-Friendly Features
But this is where the traditional look stops and modern-day, user-friendly features begin. For example, the doors come with concealed hinges. And behind the large glass door, the builders installed five adjustable shelves. They’re ideal for stereo and other electronic equipment.
The bi-fold doors open to reveal a large space for a big-screen TV. Plus, the builders can install a DVD component area above the TV. When open, the bi-fold doors retract to both sides of the TV. Also, Brandenberry can furnish the entertainment center without the bi-fold doors. And this option frees up even more TV space.
The four drawers provide room for DVDs, CDs and more. Plus, the drawers open full-extension. And this gives users the ability to easily access the entire drawer. Also, the drawers’ dovetail joints enhance their strength.
No entertainment center merges Mission furniture with today’s electronic gear like the Centennial Three Door Entertainment Center.

Comments Off on Choosing the Perfect Dining Furnishing
Dining furniture is among the most elegant to be found in any home. Features like stylish design, mullioned glass doors, eye-catching hardware and lovingly finished wood panels conjure a sense of elegance and comfort. But with so many dining room options available, Choosing the Perfect Dining Furnishing can be a daunting task. The guidelines below should help make the selection process easier and more fun.
Choosing a Dining Room Table and Chairs
The first thing you need to do when shopping for a dining table and chairs is to determine whether you want a dining table set. Or whether you wish to select a dining table and then choose chairs to match. Brandenberry Amish Furniture has a number of dining table sets, including the Trestle Mission Dining Set shown.
As you begin your search for a dining table, you first need to determine which type of dining table you want. Brandenberrry offers three types of dining tables: pedestal, trestle and leg tables. Pedestal tables usually have one or more supports (such as hefty posts) toward the middle of the table. And these tables have no feet on the perimeter. So pedestal tables command attention while allowing you to squeeze more people around the table.
With the weight of the table supported by two trestles, trestle tables are stately in appearance. Plus, they’re practical. That’s because their design makes them easy to seat several guests with no table legs in the way. The most popular type of dining table, leg tables feature a leg at each corner of the table.
Brandenberry carries at least 200 types of chairs. They come in a variety of sizes and styles, included upholstered and arm chairs. So you can easily find chairs to complement the dining table.
Choosing a Hutch and Sideboard
The fun continues as you check out the hutches, sideboards/servers as well as cabinets. A few things to look for with each piece of furniture will make the selection easier. You can choose an ‘open’ or ‘closed’ hutch. Open hutches have a countertop below the top cabinets. While closed hutches have glass cabinets on top with no countertop space. Plus, you can choose a traditional hutch or a corner hutch.
Dining room furniture shoppers might wish to look for some upscale features on hutches. They include glass shelves, can lights and light-blocking trim around the doors.
When choosing a sideboard, you might wish to look for one with glass doors or wood panel doors. Glass doors are an ideal choice if you want to show off your dinnerware or keepsakes inside the unit. Also, some sideboards come with an integrated wine rack. And others have a mirror and plate rack, plus a stemware holder on top.
Brandenberry offers a plethora of kitchen cabinets. Of course, you can choose from a large assortment of pantries. But other choices include wine cabinets, curio cabinets, pie safe cabinets and jelly cabinets. Plus leaf storage cabinets for storing unused leaves from dining tables.
Choosing the Perfect Dining Furnishing
Furniture lovers are welcome to browse Brandenberry’s website for dining room furniture. Product experts at Brandenberry are available to assist shoppers with their questions regarding choosing the perfect dining furnishing.

Practicality of Amish-Made Furniture
The finest furnishings serve a purpose. And functionality — including storage space and customization — should enhance the functionality and usability of a piece. The designers of Brandenberry furniture integrate practical features into just about every piece they create. And these elements include soft-close doors plus hutches with touch lights. In addition, designers integrate electrical outlets and mesh cloths for speakers in TV consoles and wall units. Also, you will find wall units and wine racks with a DVD/CD tray or slide-out beverage/wine accessory tray respectively. And the list goes on.
Durability of Amish-Made Furniture
Home furniture should be sturdily constructed. So family members can enjoy it for generations to come. Amish cabinetmakers build each item of furniture from solid hardwoods — such as oak, maple, cherry and hickory. Also, they integrate tried and proven woodworking techniques. And they avoid bargain substitutes like particle boards, veneers, brads and staples. So, with proper care, every unit should last for generations to come.

Comments Off on Discovering Antique Furniture
Antique furniture refers to any aged furniture piece. Traditionally, new furniture is generally referred to as “modern”, older furniture is “vintage” and still older furniture pieces are considered “antique”.
The wealth of history and background information regarding antique furniture is vast. Each piece of furniture, whether new or old, has a story. Where was it crafted? By whom? What style is it? Who purchased it?
Investing in antique furniture also requires knowledge of wood upkeep. Caring for solid wood furniture, while a priority for a piece of any age, is especially important for antique furniture. Refurbishing brings a host of challenges to the antique furniture lover. Seeking out experienced wood craftsmen for sound advice and practical tips is a good idea.
As you seek for the right furniture piece, whether modern, antique, or yet to be made, appreciate that each handcrafted furnishing has a unique history. Finding and appreciating a fine piece is a worthy investment.
Comments Off on Discovering Antique Furniture For The Home
Handcrafted hardwood furniture not only is a worthy investment when considering your current home furnishings, but the prospect of passing on a beautiful furnishing to future generations makes it all the more worthwhile. Antique oak furniture, like all handcrafted furnishings, has a unique story.
Who first crafted this particular antique oak piece? Each craftsman leaves their distinct impression on each piece. Who first bought this piece? To furniture collectors, the story of who bought a piece and how it was used and cared for is important to a furnishing’s history. Was it well-cared for and cherished, or did it fall into disuse? Many great furnishings have passed through generations forgotten and uncared for before being recognized for their quality and beauty.
Ultimately, the true test of an antique piece is the quality with which it was crafted and the wood quality with which it was made. When purchasing a handcrafted hardwood furnishing, remember that your investment is worthwhile not only now but also for years to come.
Comments Off on Dynamic Duo: The Santa Fe and Harmony Chairs
Continuing in our series of blogs highlighting custom Brandenberry pieces, we turn our attention to two custom chairs with an original sense of style: the Santa Fe and Harmony Chairs.
At first glance, the Santa Fe Chair, pictured here, boasts a striking headboard design. The delicate curves echo the leaf-patterned upholstery and manage to blend a traditional style with a modern design. Detailed Cherry wood construction (each of our pieces are hand-crafted by expert artisans) ensures that this graceful chair will stand up to heavy use and with proper care, last for generations to come.
The Harmony Chair boasts a boldly modern design that breaks free of traditional forms. A sleek, rich Espresso finish highlights this Cherry wood chair, resulting in a piece that is at once strong and elegant. Curved rear legs and columned front legs create a contrast that captures both sides of this custom chair’s personality.
Comments Off on Dynamic Storage Meets Style: The Manninton Desk and Hutch
Having a home office does not mean sacrificing the style, storage or comfort one has come to expect in the workplace. In fact, furniture enthusiasts can enjoy desks for their home office that deliver even more comfort, convenience and style than provided by traditional offices. And that’s what Dynamic Storage Meets Style: The Mannington Desk and Hutch is all about.
Dynamic Storage Meets Style: The Mannington Desk and Hutch
The style of the Mannington Desk first catches the eye. Notice the raised panels, graceful arches and beautiful, genuine woodgrain. However, the desk’s awesome storage potential is equally impressive. And in this department, the Amish builders did not disappoint. The builders included four drawers with dovetail joints for added strength. (Yes, there are four drawers – not seven. More on this in a minute.) Your keyboard rests in the keyboard drawer above the kneehole. Then to the right, you got a file drawer and two shallower drawers for your supplies.
In the left pedestal, the builders hid some cool storage space behind three false drawers. There’s a pull-out storage shelf, storage shelves on the door, plus open cabinet space inside — for even more items.
The hutch gives you even more storage. Like behind the two cabinet doors and on the open shelves. Also, the designers included a cork board under the hutch doors and a lighting system for added practicality and convenience.
Amish Custom Cabinetwork: The Brandenberry Difference
Great looks and dynamic storage are just part of what makes the Mannington Desk and Hutch special. What makes it unique is that skilled Amish cabinetmakers handcraft each unit from solid hardwoods. Like oak, cherry, maple and hickory. So you won’t find particle board, veneers, fiberboard, brands or nails anywhere. Also, the Amish men utilize traditional cabinetmaking methods handed down from their ancestors. As a result, with proper care, the desk and hutch should become a family heirloom.
What’s more, you can order the unit as shown. Or, you can order it with your custom ideas, such as wood specie, hardware, finish and other options.

Comments Off on Early-American Furniture
Early-American furniture (1680-1840) is linked, in both style and construction, to the popular styles of Great Britain. As waves of migrants crossed the Atlantic in search of a new life on American soil, craftsmen relied on the styles and construction methods of their native land.
The “Jacobean” period, during which King James ruled in England, featured furniture with dovetailed construction (see image), solid oak wood and heavy brass hardware. Once its influence was brought to American soil, this style became known as the “Pilgrim Century” period.
Similarly, the “William and Mary” period of Great Britain, featuring bun feet and turned legs, found its way to the new frontier to be known as the “Early Colonial” period.

Comments Off on Enjoy the Beauty of Natural Cherry Furniture
For those enamored with solid wood construction, a detailed understanding of the unique qualities of various woods may be second nature. But for those without a deep understanding of the inherent qualities of each wood species used in furniture construction, we will look here at cherry wood furniture.
Cherry is classified as a hardwood with a dense texture and a distinct grain pattern, though it is softer than maple wood. Cherry varies on color depending on the species of tree (from light, medium to dark colors) and may even vary within a particular piece of wood, though color inconsistencies can be evened out with proper stain and dyeing techniques, if desired (To see the diversity of cherry wood coloration, click here). Cherry furniture also may darken in color with age which makes it a desirable wood.

The 1930s and 1940s saw more Americans desiring furniture that was both functional and durable. These characteristics reflected the modern values of efficiency and versatility. Also, sectional couches and occasional tables grew in popularity.
The rise of the post-war middle class and a “baby-boom” saw an increase in multi-use furniture. For example. recliners became fixtures in the home as men sought a practical, affordable means of relaxation. Also, the home television set came into vogue. This trend made it necessary for home owners to acquire occasional furniture that would allow the entire family to gather for their favorite shows.
All of this invariably led to the creation and development of Family Room Furniture.

Comments Off on Finding High-End Furniture For Your Home
Any lover of high-end furniture knows that solid wood construction and hand-craftsmanship are essential qualities. Solid wood construction guarantees natural strength and beauty to each piece. Hand-craftsmanship makes each piece with the personal touch of an artisan. As decades come and go, it will be the solid wood, hand-crafted furnishings that will retain their value. Indeed, they will be appreciated for their durable construction and timeless beauty.
High-end furniture is defined by solid wood construction and hand-craftsmanship. Also, a certain “style” of “design” helps to define high-end furniture. For example, an oak executive desk features beautiful wood and fine construction. But the elegant design typically associated with executive desks helps its status as a “high-end” furnishing.
Ultimately, high-end furniture is defined more by the quality of its construction that its style. A poorly-made but elegant furnishing has little value compared to the traditional simplicity of a Mission style furnishing made by an expert craftsmen.
Comments Off on Finding Perfect Vintage Furniture
Vintage furniture is often misconstrued to define “any furnishing that is old.” Yet furniture enthusiasts will traditionally categorize furniture as “new”, “used”, “vintage” and “antique.” Vintage furniture is therefore older than “used” furniture, but not nearly aged enough to be considered “antique”.
Vintage furniture is truly the passion of devoted furniture lovers, those who would travel many miles, searching out-of-the-way furniture dealers and antique shops to find treasured pieces. For the curious observer, there is a wealth of informative material available online to serve as a historical background in the field of handcrafted furnishings and as a guide in recognizing vintage or antique furniture.
While most furniture retailers don’t offer vintage furniture, some handcrafted furniture retailers, particularly among the Amish, do offer pieces in the style of vintage furniture, utilizing distressing techniques and timeless styles to achieve this end. For more information regarding vintage furniture, a quick Google search should serve as an introduction.

Comments Off on Finding the Right Home Entertainment Furniture
The world of home entertainment furnishings has exploded in popularity in the past decade. First came the big-screen, then flat-screen, then high-definition. And after this, we got LCDs, then plasma, and now 3D televisions. So the demand for suitable entertainment furniture is higher than ever before. And Finding the Right Home Entertainment Furniture can be a daunting challenge.
Finding the Right Home Entertainment Furniture
So let’s try and make the process easier. For top-quality, solid hardwood home entertainment furniture, nothing beats custom-crafted furniture from Amish craftsman. In fact, their products span the gamut, from small media chests to large, lavish wall units. Here are a few tips to help you determine which entertainment furniture will work best for you:
Available Space, and Prominence of Home Entertainment Furniture
The first thing you need to ask yourself is, how much space are you willing to allocate for home entertainment furniture? If you’re ready for a major entertainment focus in your living room or den, your top choice might be a lavish wall unit such as this five-piece wall unit from Brandenberry Amish Furniture.
Conversely, you may be on the lookout for a significant, but not over-the-top media presence. Then, your choice might be something like a deluxe, one-piece entertainment center.
Yet, many householders like a TV console that’s great-looking and more of a ‘traditional’ size. If this is your preference, a TV stand which accommodates your TV, DVD, stereo, music and movies would be a great choice.
Prefer to have a corner entertainment center? Brandenberry offers a number of options, such as full-featured corner TV stands.
Or, you may be on the lookout for a traditional size, “affordable” TV stand. Brandenberry offers a plethora to choose from.

Comments Off on Flat Screen Television Cabinet Choices
When purchasing a custom flat screen television cabinet, consider your space and layout needs for your home entertainment room (see January 11th post).
Also, you’ll need to make several other decisions before purchasing a TV cabinet. First, decide on the wood species. In this regard, your primary choices are maple, brown maple, cherry, walnut, hickory, rustic hickory, rustic cherry, elm and pine wood. You can also choose quarter-sawn oak. Wood cut in a quarter-sawn fashion is more stable, has less cupping, and displays a more stark woodgrain.
What’s more, your wood choice will impact the final color of your TV cabinet. That said, you have unlimited stain color choices. One stain may produce one color and look on oak wood. But the same stain color will make the TV cabinet look quite different on a cabinet built with quarter sawn-oak wood.
Next, decide whether you need an “open” TV cabinet, or whether you want glass, speaker cloth, smoked glass, glass with mullions or wood doors. Finally, you may choose the hardware to use on your flat screen television cabinet.

Purchasing a flat screen TV can be an overwhelming task. So let’s focus on things to consider when purchasing a flat screen TV cabinet. We’ll call this Flat Screen TV Cabinet Buying Tips.
First, let’s zero in on what we mean by a flat screen TV cabinet. It can mean a cabinet that:
Flat Screen TV Cabinet Buying Tips
So here are some factors to consider before you purchase your flat screen TV cabinet or stand:
- First, decide which of the above purposes your cabinet will serve.
- Next, determine the space you need for the entertainment equipment and accessories you currently own or will own in the future. Then, consider the size of your components. Also, factor in the space you’ll need for wires and so forth. Make sure you include space so the equipment won’t generate excessive heat.
- Decide whether you need an “open” shelf concept in the front or whether you’ll go for doors with speaker cloth or glass to conceal your equipment. Also, young children or pets in your home may impact your decision.
- Determine the available space in your entertainment or TV room. Measure the wall and floor space available (height, depth and width). Remember to measure the overall TV size and the distance from the TV to your seating. Because both will have a direct impact on the actual cabinet size.
- Calculate the number of cord holes you’ll need on the back of the TV cabinet. You may consider an “open back” concept to make access to your components much easier.
- Determine whether the flat screen TV cabinet will also need to store any discs (Blu-Ray, DVD, CD), VHS tapes orother media.

Comments Off on Friends and Furniture: Annual Woodcrafters Convention
The 2011 Northern Indiana Woodcrafters Association made its annual stop from February 25 – March 2. And it left this furniture-enthusiast anticipating next year’s convention. I made the trek to Howe, Indiana, on February 28 and spent a day wandering the vast 145,000 sq. foot space of the Michiana Event Center.
Each aisle was packed to the gills with vendors and their hand-crafted goods. Also, I could hardly travel 10 feet without being struck with admiration for the craftsmanship and artistry of some beautiful furnishings. There were countless opportunities for conversation as well. Seeing old friends, colleagues and customers chatting was a common sight.
I conversed with several friendly retailers. To my delight, they brought me up to date with latest advancements in the world of Amish furniture. In some cases, I heard the fascinating personal stories of how retailers entered to the world of furniture craftsmanship. I was moved by the friendliness and professionalism of each person I encountered. Also, the artistry of their craft intrigued me greatly.
A delicious catered dinner and the anticipation of next year’s convention topped off my full day of friends and furniture at the 2011 Northern Indiana Woodcrafters Association.

Comments Off on Game Room Furniture
Game room furniture has been a popular furnishing since the earliest days of American furniture. The felt poker table has not essentially changed since it was first brought from Europe to New England. However, accents such as drink holders, leather surfaces and chip slots have kept the poker table at the cutting edge of style and construction. Similarly, the poker chair is available in its simplest, earliest handcrafted form. Also, you can get it as a deluxe chair with a gas lift, tilting seat and caster wheels.
The pool table justifiably claims the spot of king of game room furniture. Also, custom options allow customers to choose design accents. And these include talc holders, wall racks with score keepers and pocket material. What’s more, billiard cabinets are the perfect accessory for storing any other billiard related items. To top it all off, you can choose from Mission, Shaker or other styles for your pool table.
Comments Off on Gathering for Thanksgiving: The Dining Room Table
Halloween has come and gone and Thanksgiving is upon us. The Macy’s Day Parade, the heart of football season and the chilly temperatures remind us that it’s time to gather as a family and give thanks. And let is not forget what brings all families together during this holiday season: food.
For many, the prospect of a table full of delectable foods makes Thanksgiving the highlight of the year. Yet for those responsible for preparing food and hosting family and friends, this can be a trying time. We cannot aid in cooking the turkey or the mashed potatoes, but our Amish craftsmen have built the finest centerpiece of the Thanksgiving holiday–the dining table–using sturdy hardwoods and available with a split top and an assortment of storage leaves, allowing a large number of diners to sit comfortably.
Comments Off on Growing Your Knowledge of Wood Furniture
As you grow in your knowledge of real wood furniture, you’ll be able to find a furnishing that suits your needs and style. Searching for the furniture piece that’s right for you? Then, research the wood species used to construct each furnishing. Is the wood indigenous or imported? Does the piece use plywood backing or veneers?
Growing Your Knowledge of Wood Furniture
When searching for a furniture piece, ask the builder or sales consultant whether it’s constructed of solid wood. Plywood backing might cut down on cost. However, sometimes it can diminish the durability of a particular piece of furniture.
Also, ask about the construction methods. Were nails or screws used? Or, was the piece constructed with dovetailed joints and glue?
Solid wood construction is one of the great strengths of Amish wood furniture. That said, many home furnishings use affordable plywood or artificial materials. But Amish wood furniture utilizes indigenous hardwoods. And this guarantees that each piece will contain an inherent beauty and sturdiness.
Comments Off on Handcrafted Furniture For Your Home
When searching for a furnishing to invest in, there are a few basic factors to consider:
* Is it solid wood?
* Is it handcrafted?
* Is it customizable?
Handcrafted furniture holds a distinct honor in the world of furniture because each piece of handcrafted furniture bears the distinct imprint of its creator. The love and care with which an artisan makes a furnishing is evident and esteems the overall value of the piece.
An Amish dresser exemplifies a furnishing that bears the unique quality of being handcrafted. No two dressers will be exactly alike as each will bear subtle differences in cutting, sanding and finishing.
Browse online furniture catalogs or visit Amish furniture markets to view a variety of handcrafted furniture. Yet while online catalogs offer beautiful pictures and custom options for each furniture piece, nothing compares to visiting a local Amish furniture market and experiencing the beauty of handcrafted furniture up-close.

Comments Off on Handcrafted Furniture Tells a Story
A furniture collector knows that each piece of furniture has a story, and it is the joy and challenge of the collector to uncover it. But what gives a furniture piece its story? Is it solid wood construction? Is it style? The period in which it was made? Or who bought it and how it was used? All of these are parts of the story, but the biggest part is this: who made it? For this reason, handcrafted furniture is a one-of-a-kind investment.
Unlike factory assembled furniture, handcrafted furniture contains the imprint of the craftsman. The craftsman’s unique style, their work with a saw, their sanding and staining, leave a distinct impression. It is this artistic quality that explains why many handcrafted furniture pieces are considered treasures decades or centuries after they were created.
Perhaps the most notable creators of handcrafted furniture are the Amish. Living in hardworking communities primarily throughout the Midwest and the Eastern seaboard, the Amish have maintained their distinct way of life while fostering thriving furniture markets. In Shipshwana, Indiana, one of the hot-spots for Amish furniture in the Midwest, local Amish craftsmen bring in large numbers of sightseers and shoppers each year to view their goods and experience the Amish way of life firsthand.
For a close-up experience of Amish handcrafted furniture and of the craftsmen themselves, there is nothing better than visiting a local Amish furniture market. In warm weather seasons, the shops are open and bustling. Furniture seminars, including construction demonstrations (staining methods, wood cutting, etc…) are usually available to the public. Many local stores are even located on family farms, so you will truly receive the “family” touch when you visit.
The beauty of handcrafted furniture must be seen to be appreciated. Visit a local craftsmen or browse online, and let your appreciation grow as you learn more about this craft before finding the piece that’s right for you.

Comments Off on History of Solid Wood Furniture
Throughout history, communities have built furniture from various materials. Ancient Scots used stone due to a lack of wood. In the Middle Ages, large tables were usually crafted of heavy oak. Modern furniture utilizes light-weight metals, laminated plywood and durable plastics. Yet, solid wood furniture continues to enthrall customers because of its inherent beauty.
Solid wood furniture boasts great durability and an inherent beauty that is unequaled by artificial materials. Rustic furniture, or furniture that displays the natural qualities of its wood, is popular for the natural beauty of the wood which it allows to shine. A new branch of rustic furniture, known as “Live Edge”, utilizes salvaged or gnarly woods, working with the distinct characteristics of each piece of wood to create a one-of-a-kind furnishing.
Today, the Amish are the premier craftsmen of solid wood furniture. Often utilizing indigenous hardwoods and traditional wood-working methods, Amish craftsmen are at the front of eco-friendly craftsmanship and beautiful wood craftsmanship.

Comments Off on Home Entertainment Furniture
Home entertainment furniture has undergone a gradual transformation throughout American history. Early-American furniture of the Colonial Period (1700-1800) featured entertainment furniture such as the poker table and billiard table. While these pieces have evolved over the years (poker tables now offer a huge array of custom options) and still enjoy great popularity, it wasn’t until the 20th century and the advent of the home television set that entertainment furniture began to radically transform.
With the home television set, home entertainment furniture began to grow at a rapid pace. Recliners grew in popularity as families gathered to watch television in comfort. Entertainment centers match television stands in popularity, housing VCR/DVD players, video game consoles, speaker systems, DVR recorders and large screen televisions.

Comments Off on How to Buy the Right Home Furnishings, Part 1
Buying a new house can conjure a special mix of nerves, excitement — and dread. Yet, the inspection, the loans, the envisioning of a new future, and the prospect of transforming your new house into a ‘home’ can be exciting. So in How to Buy the Right Home Furnishings, Part 1, you’ll get a few tips on finding the right home furnishings to turn your new house into the cozy home you’ve always been dreaming of.
Assess Your Essentials
Every homeowner has the ‘essential’ furnishings in mind. And the trick is to simply narrow the field to a select number. So try to secure four to six furnishings that are ‘must-haves.’ And these ‘must haves’ might be a plasma TV stand, bedroom dresser, living room sofa set or toy chest. So simply create a list. And make sure to prioritize your list. Then, stick to it! And you’ll be surprised how helpful it can be to clearly articulate and define what exactly you’re looking for.
Keep An Eye On Quality
In the world of home furnishings, it might be tempting to consider the visual appeal of furniture to be a major indicator of quality. Certainly genuine woodgrain, eye-catching designs and trendy hardware are important. But furniture buyers also need to consider whether a piece of furniture is made from solid hardwood or substitute items like veneered particle board, plastics or other forms of man-made materials.
This is why furniture buyers need to consider solid wood furniture from Brandenberry Amish Furniture. Simply stated, this furniture represents the pinnacle of quality. For example, the Amish craftsmen who build Brandenberry’s furniture use solid Midwestern hardwoods like oak, maple, cherry and hickory. So you won’t find bargain substitutes like veneered wood or cardboard. Nor will you find particle board, brads or nails.
For more tips, check out How to Buy the Right Furnishings, Part 2.
Comments Off on How to Buy the Right Home Furnishings, Part 2
Most popular chain furniture retailers sell primarily on price. And that’s why they always seem to host one sale after another. Granted, customers can get home furnishings at great prices from big box retailers. But, as you will find out in How to Buy the Right Home Furnishings, Part 2, there may be more valuable issues to look for than a low price.
Think value rather then the lowest price
The initial price of solid hardwood, custom-made furniture usually runs higher than its factory-made counterparts. And the furniture offered by Brandenberry Amish Furniture is a case in point. However, when one factors longevity into the equation, Brandenberry custom hardwood furniture prices out to be a better deal. And this is because artisans build Brandenberry’s furniture to last for generations to come.
Consider the way Brandenbery’s furniture is built. And it’s easy to see why value is no idle talk. Skilled Amish cabinetmakers painstakingly handcraft each piece of furniture. And they use solid hardwoods — such as oak, maple, cherry and hickory. Also, the Amish men do not use bargain substitutes, such as particle board and veneered cardboard.
What’s more, the Amish men use tried-and-proven techniques and supplies. For example, they build with dovetail and mortise and tenon joints. Plus, they never use nails, brads and the like. In addition, Brandenberry’s Amish artisans sometimes use quarter-sawn wood instead of traditionally-sawn wood. Quarter-sawn lumber is pricier. But it yields many benefits. Like less cupping, expansion and contraction. Plus more spectacular genuine woodgrain patterns.
It’s little wonder that Brandenberry’s furniture builders handcraft each piece to last for generations to come. In fact, they often become cherished family heirlooms. So assess your budgetary limitations. Then, figure time and durability into the equation. And make your choice.

All children’s and baby furnishings should use organic, non-toxic stains, paints and dyes. If you’re unsure about the safety of a product, consult the retailer or builder.

Comments Off on King of the Suburbs: The American Elm Tree
Suburban landscapers can tell you that knowing the properties of each type of grass, tree and flower is as important as recognizing their beauty. For this reason, you could find the American elm tree lining suburban streets across the United States. So that’s why we say, King of the Suburbs: The American Elm Tree.
King of the Suburbs: The American Elm Tree
Elm lovers will remind you that the tree is noted for its graceful form, long life, fast growth and tolerance of compacted soils. Also, you may recall that the famed 1984 horror film, Nightmare on Elm Street, found part of its terror in the fact that nearly every residential neighborhood in America boasted an “Elm Street”!
Top features of the American elm include its interlocking grain plus resistance to splitting and water decay. A a result, craftsmen have used elm wood in chair seats, coffins and wheels. Also, in medieval Europe, elm was the wood of choice for water pipes! However, elm wood’s most popular use has become cabinetmaking and furniture.
In the 20th century, the Dutch elm disease (DED) strained the availability of the American elm tree. But this has only heightened the appreciation of the wood and its use in American homes.

Comments Off on Legacy of Amish Woodworking: Early American Furniture
The beginnings of Early-American furniture can be traced to European migrants who settled along the Eastern seaboard of the United States. There, they used their native trades, including woodworking, to create a sustained existence. In this way, classic European furniture styles were brought to the United States and began a slow transformation in style and design to suit the new surroundings.
Waves of Amish migrants would leave Switzerland to form communities in Pennsylvania and parts of the Mid-West. The Amish ethics of integrity, self-sufficiency and hard work would infuse their daily work, including the crafting of furniture. The Mission, Shaker and Queen Anne styles would come into being during the era of Early American Furniture, as well as a variety of distinct design features.
Careful, detailed craftsmanship, high quality wood selection and custom construction make our furniture special. Come visit us in Shipshewana to see why the legacy of Early American Furniture is still alive among the Amish.
Comments Off on Legacy of Maple Wood and the Hudson Bed
In previous blogs, we’ve looked at Cherry, Elm and Hickory woods as examples of common woods used in furniture craftsmanship. Each wood has a distinct composition and style. Cherry has a dense texture and varies in color, Elm has a smooth, interlocking grain and Hickory often utilizes rustic, natural bark accents. In this blog, our focus is the Legacy of Maple Wood and the Hudson Bed.
A diverse, practical wood, Maple is used for bowling pins and the official MLB baseball bats. Noted for its hard, close grains, Maple is categorized by craftsmen into categories of “hard” and “soft” Maple. While “hard” Maple composes bowling pins and baseball bats, “soft” Maple (also called “Brown Maple” by furniture craftsmen) is used for furniture construction. Maple wood is also noted for its wonderful acoustic properties, making it a wonderful choice for hollow-bodied or resonant musical instruments such as drum shells and guitars.

Mission Style Furniture is one of the most popular furniture designs today. But, as its name suggests, Mission furniture has a long history. In fact, the style dates back to Catholic missions which sprung up in the American Southwest.
Mission Style Furniture
As you might remember from US history, Franciscan missionaries from Spain built adobe-walled missions in California and elsewhere. But what you may not know is that their simplistic building design inspired succeeding generations of artists. In fact, the ‘Mission’ design style began to filter into other fields of design. Such as sculpture, architecture, painting and furniture.
Mission Furniture Goes Mainstream
Gustav Stickley became the first craftsman to mass-produce and popularize the Spanish Mission style. Over time, the Mission style ethos of simplicity and practicality resonated deeply with the American people. So this threw open the door of opportunity for Stickley. He broaden his Mission furniture line to include naturalistic wicker furniture with rough-hewn wood and bark accents. Also, these new styles perfectly complemented the cleaner, sturdier Mission designs.
Mission Meets Amish Custom Hardwood Construction
So where can furniture lovers get the best Mission furniture today? That’s easy. It’s Brandenberry Amish Furniture. This Amish furniture store nestles among the Amish farms and Amish custom woodshops of Northern Indiana. And Amish craftsmen painstakingly craft each piece in their massive lineup of Mission furniture. In fact, the Amish men use traditional, ‘old world’ cabinetmaking techniques. Comments Off on Modern Early American Furniture
By the 1950s, the dark fabric tones common for upholstered furniture were replaced with a brighter palette of colors. Under the influence of modern Abstract painters, pink, yellow and aqua became popular selections for couches and chairs. The “efficient” home reflected a consumer-based, faster-paced lifestyle.
The demand for custom furniture grew with the desire for greater freedom of personal expression and the proliferation of home electronics. Still, the affection for early American furniture (1680-1840) was rekindled during these post-war years as families sought to recall a simpler, slower time.
Comments Off on Modern Mission Makes a Splash: The Trenta Table Set
The Mission furniture style enjoys a long and rich legacy that has been written about previously on this blog. As the popularity of the Mission furniture exploded after its early introduction and continues to draw public appeal decade after decade, the original style has undergone transformations ranging from the simple to the complex. The Royal Mission style added corbels and other wood details while the Prairie Mission style transformed the wood slats into delicate yet sturdy works of art.
The custom-crafted Trenta Table Set, pictured here, and found only at Brandenberry Amish Furniture, boasts a distinctly modern style that stays true to its roots. Boasting Quarter Sawn Oak wood the mortise and tenon construction, each Trenta Chair feature a distinct angled headpiece that complements the other, resulting in a design that breaks free of all traditional forms.

Comments Off on Moving Forward, Looking Back: The Cascade Bedroom Set
The best Amish furniture craftsmen have always worked in tension between old and new, traditional and progressive. Plus classic and modern. And Moving Forward, Looking Back: The Cascade Bedroom Set illustrates this paradigm.
But first, here’s more about how the most beloved furniture styles exemplify this dichotomy:
-The Shaker style has a rich tradition and a simple style that is timeless and modern in its elegance.
-The Mission style enjoys a unique past from its American West beginnings to its continued appeal among new generations.
-The Queen Anne style’s roots reach back to England. But, its ornate beauty is still refreshingly modern.
Moving Forward, Looking Back: The Cascade Bedroom Set
The Cascade Bedroom Set exemplifies a style that has bridged the gap between classic and modern. In fact, it is a unique set that blends classic hand-craftsmanship and traditional styles with progressive glass and leather accents and modern storage baskets. Also, mitered drawer fronts add the finishing touch to the bold style of this bedroom set.

Comments Off on My Mom-and-Pop Shops vs Chain Retailers Quest
Anyone searching for a nice piece of home furniture probably weighed the question of where to find it. And when I searched for a TV stand, I encountered the same question: Where should I go? Should I visit a ‘mom-and-pop’ shop or a large chain retailer? So I hit the streets in my mom-and-pop shops versus chain retailers quest.
My mission was clear. I wanted to browse a variety of furniture retailers. And I wanted to find out the quality, price, customization and sales help. In one day, I perused three chain retailers. And I concluded that each was essentially identical to the other in every category. The quality was fair to good. Prices were generally affordable. Plus, the sales staff was helpful and friendly, and customization was non-existent.
About a month later, I visited the Amish country in the heart of Northern Indiana. And I made my way to a family-owned and operated shop. It had an old converted barn as a showroom and a stunning selection of wood furnishings. The prices were reasonable. And, the quality was superb. Plus, custom options abounded. In fact, I discovered that I could design entire pieces from scratch, to my needs and specifications!
I was struck by this unassuming Amish-owned retailer. Also, once again, I considered my quest to find the perfect TV stand. Was I looking for a quick fix? A chain store could help me there. Or was I looking for a piece to take pride in and hold on to for another generation? I think I found my answer!
So, my mom-and-pop shops versus chain retailers quest was a success.

Comments Off on Old Hickory Furniture
Old hickory furniture, also called “rustic”, “primitive” or “cabin” furniture, features solid hickory construction and a traditional style. The popularity of old hickory furniture may be due in part to Gustav Stickley, the famed American craftsman who mass-produced Mission style furniture. He created a line of primitive furniture, often made of hickory, which captured the rustic style of cabin furniture.
Often, the hickory wood is left in its natural state. Some pieces even include bark accents, adding to the natural style. Today, old hickory furniture is enjoyed not just in rural settings such as cabins and lodges, but in upscale homes as well. Browse handcrafted hickory furniture today and be surprised at the versatility and beauty of its style.
Comments Off on Plates on Parade: Finding a Beautiful Display Shelf
Some home furniture pieces serve a strictly practical purpose. For example, leaf storage cabinets, while beautifully-crafted and designed, simple store table leaves. Bread boxes, while richly-finished, simply store bread. But some home furnishings blend the practical with the aesthetic, creating unique spaces for storage while simultaneously creating space for display.
The Dawson Plate Shelves, pictured at left, feature solid Eastern White Pine construction with a Cranberry Red stain and a unique “sand-thru paint” style which adds a unique distressed look. These shelves are wonderful ways to store and display your beautiful dinnerware.
For those looking for something more rustic, check out the Hickory Three Shelf Stand, which boasts solid Hickory construction with natural accents and plenty of room for storage and display.

Comments Off on Rack ‘Em Up: The Classic Mission Pool Table
Great pool tables let people show off their skills while the table shows off its quality woodwork. And the Classic Mission Pool Table does both jobs perfectly. Granted, this pool table may not help pool lovers improve their game. But it certainly will rack up a visual treat as players and onlookers admire its superior-quality woodwork.
Fine cabinetmaking, indeed. The Classic Amish Mission Pool Table boasts a rich wood finish. And this is due in part to its construction from quarter-sawn white oak. Quarter-sawn refers to how the wood is cut. And quarter-sawn cut wood is more stable than plain-sawn. So it’s less prone to cupping, expansion and contraction. The cut also reveals more dramatic woodgrain.
So the Amish builders crafted the pool table to impress. And this must be why they crafted fluted designs on all four corners. Also, the wood slats and curved base are not just sturdy. They’re also eye-catching.
What’s more, the plush Cordovan leather pockets (named for their origin in Cordoba, Spain) add an upscale touch. Plus, these features, along with the 22-ounce cloth separate the Classic Mission Pool Table from run-of-the-mill game tables.
Customize Classic Mission Pool Table
Billiard-playing furniture lovers can customize the Classic Mission Pool Table. In fact, they can select from more than 22 cloth colors, 6 pocket options and 3 table sizes. So several generations will be able to enjoy the timeless beauty of a game of pool – and the Classic Mission Pool Table itself.
Check Out Our Other Game Tables
Wish to have accompanying or alternate game tables? Brandenberry has other great options. The Signature Mission Poker Table is a case on point. A single pedestal table, it’s made of quarter-sawn white oak. And it features a genuine leather top. Surrounding the leather top are eight player settings – each with its own drink holder and chip slots.
Other card game tables include the Arts and Crafts Cabinet Table, and the Arts and Crafts Game Table. Also, a chess/checker board is etched in the top of the Hickory Country Delight Game Table.

Or, it might be the feeling of utter relaxation when sitting or lying on furniture that’s designed to look cobbled together and fully ‘broken in.’ So in Rustic Beauty, Natural Style: Cabin Furniture, we’ll delve into rustic cabin furniture. And we’ll explore some items you might wish to acquire for your home.
Rustic Beauty, Natural Style: Cabin Furniture
Of all the solid wood furniture styles retailers offer and furniture-lovers enjoy, cabin furniture is perhaps the most unique. And hickory wood is one of the most popular choices for cabin furniture. In fact, craftsmen often use natural pieces of wood with knots and bark to enhance the furniture’s rustic appearance. These natural accents add a custom touch to each furnishing. What’s more, these imperfections are the main reason no two pieces of cabin furniture are exactly alike. Of course, furniture aficionados love this one-of-a-kind, ‘natural,’ or ‘authentic’ look.
Brandenberry Amish Furniture: Cabin Furniture at its Best
With their skills in crafting custom hardwood furniture, Amish cabinetmakers offer some of the finest cabin furniture available today. And furniture lovers can see these pieces at Brandenberry Amish Furniture in Shipshewana, Indiana.
In fact, Brandenberry offers cabin furniture for every room in your house. Take the living room or den. The hickory loveseat (shown) features the wood having knots and other imperfections. Comments Off on Rustic Furniture
While factory-produced furniture offers a cheap option for quick home furnishing necessities, handcrafted furnishings offer a one-of-a-kind beauty. This is most evident in Rustic Furniture. Rustic Furniture has a rich history in America is a alternative style for the poor as well as the rich, and a school of design tied to the Arts and Crafts Movement of the early-20th century.
Rustic Furniture features a natural, raw aesthetic. Pieces are crafted of natural hardwoods (Hickory is a common choice) which still include bark accents and wood knots. Sometimes, fresh wood is harvested, steamed and bent into a variety of shapes to add decorative shapes to furnishings. The appeal of Rustic Furniture transcends those looking for cabin or porch furniture, but has broadened its appeal to home owners looking for beautiful, one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted pieces.
Comments Off on Rustic Furniture For Your Home
Blending natural hardwood construction with traditional styles and a timeless appeal, rustic furniture has remained a popular furniture style for decades. Rustic furniture had its beginning in the early-20th century. As the popularity or Mission and wicker furniture grew (thanks to Wisconsin-born craftsman Gustav Stickley) and the economic climate of America grew tense, people sought practical, beautiful furniture that would boast great durability and versatility.
Rustic furniture soon emerged from its place as “cabin” or “lodge” pieces and furniture-enthusiasts saw the versatility of the rustic style as a bedroom, living room or dining furnishing.
Today, rustic furniture is still crafted the traditional way by skilled Amish artisans using old world construction methods. Visit your local Amish furniture market or retailer and see first-hand why rustic furniture is truly one-of-a-kind. From the natural wood knots and bark accents the the steam-bent construction to the timeless styles and durable construction, rustic furniture is a style for the ages.
Comments Off on Rustic Nobility: The Noble Collection Occasional Tables
In previous blogs, such as here and here, we have highlighted the rustic beauty of natural Hickory furniture. Noted for its rustic beauty (back accents and wood knots) and great durability, Hickory furniture has made the leap from “cabin” or “lodge” furniture to “living room” furniture due to its natural beauty. With this in mind, we look at two distinct pieces that share a common design: the Hickory Noble Collection Writing Desk and the Hickory Noble Collection Library Table.
The Hickory Noble Collection Writing Desk boasts natural construction and an Old World Mission Finish. A sturdy shelf and wood slats make this a practical, sturdy piece.
The Hickory Noble Collection Library Table shares a similar style to the writing desk, but boasts a darker, sleeker finish that completely transforms the rustic style into an elegant design.

Comments Off on Rustic, Practical Beauty: Country Furniture
Gustav Stickley is credited with popularizing and producing Mission style furniture. His designs captured the imaginations of the American public. Out of this grew a line of Stickley’s wicker furniture which also sold well. Country furniture, or furniture that echoed the simple designs of the countryside, became a popular option for homeowners seeking something beautiful but different from their home furnishings.
Though there is not a definitive country style, simple pieces that possess rustic, practical beauty and are free of ornate elegance are generally defined as “country.” Amish tables in particular boast a wide variety of styles and designs including country. However, it must be noted that country style furniture can possess beautiful wood accents and an elegant style. To discern what is “country” and what isn’t, spend time researching the variety of styles available. Better yet, consider visiting a local Amish furniture market and talk to someone knowledgeable.

“Put your hands to work and your heart to God”
Shaker Amish Furniture traces its origins back to the time of the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783). A sect of the Quakers, the “Shakers” escaped the religious turmoil of their native England and settled in close-knit, self-sufficient communities along the Eastern seaboard.
Early Shaker furniture construction began as a necessity to accommodate large worship gatherings. The Shaker ethics of simplicity, practicality and integrity informed the construction process: pine wood was commonly used for its light weight and affordability, innovative joinery increased durability, and curved wood slats provided comfort.
Shaker furniture boasts a one-of-a-kind beauty. Elegant finials, tapered spindles and curved profiles lend an elegance to each handcrafted piece. Today, Shaker furniture remains in high demand among collectors and casual shoppers.
Comments Off on Shaker Furniture For Your Home
What can be said about Shaker Furniture that has not already been said? Its simple elegance is renowned, its appeal is timeless and its history is rich. Yet while the appreciation of Shaker Furniture has remained steady through generations, where can one find authentic Shaker Furniture?

Often, these retailers will work hand-in-hand with customers, from the initial stages of design through wood and stain selection to the final design features, ensuring complete satisfaction. Such retailers maintain a vital connection to the original spirit of style and craftsmanship that has made Shaker furniture so popular.
Today, Shaker furniture has adapted with the changing tastes of public appeal and now encompasses a broad variety of styles and designs, from modern to traditional, simple to ornate, but each true to the one-of-a-kind, original Shaker style. The Shaker Hill Occasional Table Collection (pictured above) features the timeless Shaker style and beautiful wood construction.

Comments Off on Solid Wood Furniture
Today, wood craftsmen, particularly the Amish, continue to craft wonderful home furnishings using sturdy (often indigenous) hardwoods, ensuring a level of strength and elegance in each piece. Throughout history, communities have built furniture from various materials. Ancient Scots used stone due to a lack of wood. In the Middle Ages, large tables were usually crafted of heavy oak. Modern furniture utilizes light-weight metals, laminated plywood and durable plastics.
Amish craftsmen stay true to their ethics of simplicity by hand-crafting their pieces, though sometimes incorporating new tools and advanced techniques into the woodworking process. Often, they utilize local wood suppliers to find the best indigenous woods available.
One of the great advantages of investing in real wood furniture is its durability. Hand-crafted furnishings are not only suited for immediate use but will almost certainly endure for decades, if not generations, if treated and cared for properly.
Handcrafted hardwood furniture represents the craftsmen who makes it, so there is always a point of pride in creating the best possible furnishing. Whatever type of furnishing you are seeking, consider the best: solid wood furniture.

Comments Off on Storage Beds: A New Trend in Bedroom Furniture
The furniture industry pays a lot of attention to the variety of storage chests and elegant beds available for the bedroom. Yet, the most exciting new trend in bedroom furniture is a combination of chests and beds. The storage bed. So let’s take a look at Storage Beds: A New Trend in Bedroom Furniture.
Storage Beds: A New Trend in Bedroom Furniture
The concept of a storage bed is so simple, it begs the question: why didn’t someone think of it before? The area under a traditional bed is like a vast, largely unused space. Yes, some people place their shoes there. Or hard-to-store stuff like suitcases and extra boxes. Also, dogs and cats like to hide there. Especially if they’re trying to escape a thunderstorm – or a bath. And worse of all, you have to vacuum it ever so often. And this is quite a feat, especially in the case of king and queen beds!
Storage Beds: Perfect Storage Solution
Getting a storage bed for your bedroom solves three big problems. First, the drawers give you needed storage space for bedding items – like sheets, pillowcases and blankets. Alternately, you can use it for clothing or keepsakes. Secondly, storage beds give your room a neater appearance as the beautiful woodwork of the bed fills the space between the mattress and the floor. And thirdly, storage beds eliminate the chore of tediously maneuvering the vacuum cleaner’s extension tool back and forth under the bed to suck up the non-stop collection of dust.
Storage Beds from Brandenberry Amish Furniture
Brandenberry Amish Furniture offers an impressive collection of storage beds. And skilled Amish craftsmen custom-craft each bed from solid hardwoods. Like cherry, maple and oak. In fact, the deluxe Pine Hollow Storage Bed (shown) is an example of an Amish storage bed.
The bed itself features three full-extension drawers on each side. So you’ll enjoy lots of convenient storage space. Plus, the drawers open full extension. As a result, you get easy access to entire drawers. Also, dovetail joints in the drawers enhance strength and durability.

Comments Off on The Advantages of Solid Wood Furniture
These days, there’s a high degree of sophistication in the manufacturing of furniture using wood veneers and synthetic materials. So it causes one to wonder if solid wood furniture might not be a thing of the past. Indeed, an entire industry has developed around the manufacturing and marketing of inexpensive, easy-to-assemble furniture. So it’s high time to explore the advantages of solid wood furniture.
Based on its beauty, strength and durability, solid wood furniture remains unrivaled.
Beauty of Solid Wood Furniture
Take a passing glance at synthetic hardwood furniture. You might think it’s indistinguishable from solid hardwood furniture. And this is due in part to the fancy way manufacturers design and build furniture today. For example, many builders use wood veneers or plastics that closely replicate real wood. Also, they often use veneers for the parts of furniture that are most obvious. And they use bargain substitutes everywhere else. In addition, they apply thick coats of varnish to materials like particle board. So the furniture looks like real hardwood.
However, inspect this type of furniture closely. And you can tell which is the real McCoy. For example, check out where the veneers end. Such as at the end of a raised panel. And you can see an abrupt end of the fake woodgrain. Also check out the joints, undersides of shelves and the interiors of drawers. And they give tell-tale evidence of inferior substitutes.
But with solid hardwood furniture, the luster of the solid hardwood shines through on the highly visible areas as well as the undersides, backs and drawer interiors.
Strength and Durability of Solid Wood Furniture
Solid hardwood has been the standard material used in furniture over thousands of years. And this is due in great measure to its strength and durability. Plus, this is why Amish builders depend on solid hardwood. And numerous Amish cabinetmaking shops in Indiana and Ohio sell their excellent products through Brandenberry Amish Furniture. The Amish craftsmen use hardwoods like cherry, maple, oak and hickory. Also, they use solid hardwood in places where others place cheap substitutes. Like for shelves, and in the back or bottom of furniture.
This means the solid hardwood furniture you order from Brandenberry should, with proper care, last for generations to come. In fact, many pieces become family heirlooms.
The Brooklyn Gentlemen’s Chest, pictured here, boasts dynamic storage space and sturdy wood craftsmanship. This solid wood furniture piece not only provides the space and style for today’s needs, but the timeless beauty to become a treasured heirloom.

Comments Off on The Beauty of Cabin Furniture
Strongly associated with the “Rustic” and “Primitive” furniture styles, Cabin furniture is marked by its natural wood style and simple style. Often, bark accents and wood knots add a rustic beauty to the Cabin Furniture pieces. The Hickory Solid Oval Top Coffee Table, pictured here, features natural Hickory wood with a natural finish.
The history of Cabin furniture is difficult to trace, yet its popularity flourished in the early twentieth century as an economic downturn and the popularity of Mission and wicker furniture led people toward a rustic, practical taste in furniture. Since then, Cabin style furniture has outgrown its place as suitable only for cabins and lodges, but has been welcomed into the home by furniture-enthusiasts who recognize its beauty and dynamic style.
Cabin furniture is available in a variety of styles and designs, from bedroom and living room to dining and even children’s furniture. To see the intricately detailed woodwork and rustic style of Cabin furniture first-hand, visit your local Amish furniture market.

Comments Off on The Majestic Elm: A Brief History
Throughout the 20th century, the beautiful elm tree could be seen lining most American and Canadian residential neighborhoods. Its high canopied crown provided great shade. Also, its quick growth and longevity made it the ideal accent tree. So let’s take a look at The Majestic Elm: A Brief History.
The history of the elm tree stretches back to ancient Europe. In the ‘old country’, people used elm leaves and branches as cattle feed. Some even used it as human food in times of great scarcity. In addition, the ancient Romans used elm trees to sustain grapevines — as a make-shift grape arbor. Also, Native Americans utilized this durable and water-resistant wood to fashion canoes, rope, utensils and roofing.
A fungal infection known as Dutch elm disease (DED) has placed the American elm’s graceful form under attack during the 20th century. However, while DED ravaged the elm population, its spread had lessened in recent years. So this has resulted in a renewed appreciation and use of the American elm in furniture craftsmanship and industrial supply.

Early American Furniture Information
Handcrafted American furniture enjoys a rich and storied history. The beginnings of Early American Furniture can be traced to European migrants who settled along the Eastern seaboard of the United States. There, they used their native trades, including woodworking, to create a sustained existence.
In this way, classic European furniture styles were brought to the United States and began a slow transformation in style and design to suit the new surroundings. Ornate styles began to lose their opulence in favor of simpler designs that better reflected the nature of the new American people.
Eventually, migrants from various regions and knowledgeable in various furniture designs, not only established a thriving furniture market, but a variety of distinct styles. The Mission, Shaker and Queen Anne styles would come into being during the era of Early American Furniture, as well as a variety of distinct design features.

Shaker Style Furniture
Shaker furniture begins with the Shakers, a Christian religious group that settled along America’s Eastern seaboard after fleeing European persecution. Their simplicity and work ethic naturally infused their furnishings which they crafted for practical use in the home and religious gatherings.
Mission Style Furniture
Mission furniture was inspired by the beautiful adobe Spanish missions built by Spanish missionaries in the American Southwest. The unique designs of these missions influenced architects, artists and furniture craftsmen, but it was Gustav Stickley who first mass-produced and popularized mission furniture.

Simplicity. Shaker furniture is marked by a truly simple, functional design.

Vintage Furniture refers to any furniture piece 30-100 years old. Anything older is classified as “antique,” while anything newer is considered “modern.”
At the turn of the 20th century, the move to cut back on economic excess and lavish personal styles marked a shift toward simpler, natural home decor. Furniture lovers rekindled their affection for classic American furniture. And this trend remains a consistent influence in the furniture market to the present day.
During the 1920s, American furniture craftsmen began to experiment with diverse styles. These styles incorporated designs from the French “Art Nouveau” school of design, the British “Arts and Crafts Movement,” traditional Japanese styles (popularized by Frank Lloyd Wright), and the Spanish Mission architecture of the American West (see image).
In addition, revivals of the Italian, French Renaissance and Gothic styles impacted the furniture market. But the public trend toward a simpler American style meant that these ornate European styles saw only limited favor.
Comments Off on Vintage Furniture: The Furniture Lover’s Quest
Solid wood furniture boasts a long, rich history in America full of diverse designs, stunning styles and durable craftsmanship. As we’ve discussed in previous blogs, any furnishings 30-100 years old is generally considered “vintage”, while anything older is classified as “antique” and anything newer is simply “modern”. Vintage Furniture: The Furniture Lover’s Quest, helps us find the perfect vintage furniture.
Vintage furniture is not for the faint-hearted. Only true furniture-enthusiasts interested in learning the vast history of wood furniture and excited to search though countless furniture retailers will discover the joy of finding the perfect vintage furniture piece in the most unexpected place.
While most wood furniture retailers, especially Amish shops, will likely not stock true vintage furniture, these craftsmen can be valuable resources in discovering where to find vintage pieces and what styles or designs to look for.
Comments Off on What Exactly Is Primitive Furniture?
Known for its rustic style and choice wood selection, primitive furniture has become a popular alternative for furniture lovers seeking one-of-a-kind pieces. Primitive furniture is notable for its raw wood construction. Often, natural Hickory wood is used, sometimes with bark accents, to a natural touch.
The popularity of primitive furniture, and its rise from “lodge” or “cabin” furniture to “home” furniture, may be traced to Gustav Stickley. The Wisconsin-born craftsmen helped create and widely-produce Mission-style furniture before turning his sights to “natural” or “primitive” furniture.
Beginning as furnishings for patios, porches and cabins, Stickley’s primitive furniture grew in popularity. It is still enjoyed today. And today, homeowners found ways to incorporate the rustic style into their home decor.
When searching for primitive furniture, inquire about the wood species and construction methods. A little research will help you find a piece that’s perfect for you.

Comments Off on What’s the Big Deal About Hardwood Furniture?
The greatest distinguishing factors in what defines quality furniture are handcrafting and the use of hardwood — instead of particle board and other bargain substitutes. In fact, hardwood furniture separates itself from mass-produced synthetic furniture. Of course, mass-produced furniture is more affordable. So what’s the big deal about hardwood furniture? Assembly-line furniture lacks durability, personal guarantee — and the look of genuine hardwood.
What’s the Big Deal About Hardwood Furniture?
With hardwood furniture, especially handcrafted pieces, you can be assured that they will last for years to come. Also, they possess an inherent beauty, and represent the skills and pride of a craftsman.
Durability comes from the strength of the wood and the skill in construction. For example, dovetailed drawers and skillful gluing are enough to ensure a piece stays together indefinitely. What’s more, the inherent beauty of hardwood furniture comes from the quality of the wood species, the finish and the craftsmen’s skill. Often, wood artisans use the highest-quality indigenous hardwoods for their pieces.
Handcrafted hardwood furniture represents the craftsmen who make it. So there is always a point of pride in creating the best possible furnishing. Whatever type of furnishing you are seeking, consider the best: handcrafted hardwood furniture.

So What’s So Special About Solid Wood Furniture? Here are two reasons solid wood has been the material of choice for fine furniture throughout history.
Beauty of Solid Wood Furniture
The popularity of veneered furniture proves a major point. Wood boasts a natural attraction. So it’s widely imitated. Yet, wood is impossible to replicate with synthetic alternatives. In fact, the color, grain, density and scent of natural wood contribute to the unique beauty of natural wood furniture. Plus, these features ensure that each wood piece is one-of-a-kind.
Durability of Solid Wood Furniture
With proper care, wood lasts a long time. And wood also holds its beauty for the long haul. Oak and cherry are two of the most common choices for furniture. And both wood species resist heat, cold, moisture and force. So they’re perfect for furniture that will be used heavily in the home.
Today, with the advent of study, cheap synthetic materials, many question the role of wood in the creation of home furnishings. But synthetic materials will remain a less-favorable alternative to the beauty and durability of solid wood furniture.

But given the health and comfort benefits, the extra cost is well worth it. That said, here are some things to look for as you Whistle While You Work: Find The Ultimate Office Chair:
Lumbar Support: You should choose an office chair that supports your lower back. Proper lumbar support helps prevent back strain, which can worsen over time.
Proper Fit: Before investing in a chair, you should, if possible, sit in the chair to make sure it’s the right fit for you. And when you sit in the chair, check if it provides lumbar support. Ideally, the backrest should follow the curve of your spine. Also, make sure the arm rests are at a comfortable height. In addition, the backrest should be at the correct angle. What’s more, your feet should rest comfortably on the floor. In addition, your knees should easily extend beyond the end of the seat.
Easy-to-Roll Wheels: Make sure the wheels are easy to roll on a carpeted floor. If that’s difficult, consider getting a chair with wheels specifically designed for carpets. Or invest in a chair mat.
Swivel Base: Make sure the chair swivels freely. This allows you to enjoy easy access to various parts of your desk and credenza.
Fabric: If your office tends to get warm, consider getting a breathable fabric instead of a non-breathable material like leather.

Comments Off on Why Pay More For Solid Wood Furniture?
Why pay more for solid wood furniture? One of the first decisions furniture buyers make is whether or not to buy furniture made of solid wood. But this decision might be more difficult than it seems. Because many pieces of furniture these days are made with veneers, plastics, particle board and the like. And they’re often so nicely finished, even astute buyers have difficulty telling real wood pieces from furniture made from bargain substitutes.
Solid wood furniture is usually more expensive than furniture made with materials like plastics, veneers and particle board. Veneers are thin slices of wood that are usually glued to particle board. And particle board is made from wood chips, sawmill shavings and sawdust, which are fused together with glue and pressure.
So why is wood furniture superior to substitutes? Here are a few reasons:
Strength of Solid Wood
The very nature of seasoned hardwood makes it incredibly strong. And that’s why cabinetmakers confidently use solid hardwood for shelves, benches, bed frames and sofa frames. All applications in which the furniture must bear a lot of weight. Also, the density and composition of solid wood enable cabinetmakers to create dovetail and mortis and tenon joints. Plus use screws instead of nails or brads.
Particle board cannot handle such punishment. That’s because it’s brittle and relatively soft. Plus, it cannot be fashioned like real wood. Also, particle board is irreplacable once damaged.
Durability of Solid Wood
Solid hardwood furniture is incredibly sturdy. With proper care, solid wood furniture should last for generations to come. In fact, solid hardwood furniture often become family heirlooms. So solid wood furniture withstands the wear and tear which comes from daily use. Plus, it usually requires minimal maintenance.
And when solid hardwood furniture begins to show its age, you refinish it. Try refinishing a veneer that’s only 1/8 inch thick! And you certainly can’t refinish solid plastic or paper veneers.
Beauty of Solid Wood
Oscar Wilder said, “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery…” So the widespread imitations of solid hardwood furniture underscore this reality. Solid wood furniture is absolutely beautiful.

Comments Off on Wooden Bedroom Furniture
The sheer variety of wooden bedroom furniture is overwhelming when considering purchasing a furnishing or multiple furnishings. One must consider the wood species being used in construction: do you prefer the beauty of maple or the strength of oak? One must also consider the construction method: do you prefer a handcrafted piece or a more affordable factory assembled piece?
The types of bedroom furniture also merit much consideration. Are you looking for a chest? If so, what kind? A mule chest offers more storage space than an armoire, while a classic five or seven drawer chest offers space within a smaller size. Even nightstands come with or without doors, with or without storage drawers, with or without open storage spaces and in various sizes.
Amish furniture beds come in a huge selection of styles and sizes, with or without slats or panels, and with many more options. To appreciate the full diversity of wooden bedroom furniture, browse online furniture catalogs or visit a local furniture store, or better yet, visit a local Amish furniture market.
