Purchasing a Television Cabinet
Flat Screen Television Cabinet Choices
When purchasing a custom flat-screen television cabinet, consider your space and layout needs for your home entertainment room (see January 11th post).
Also, you’ll need to make several other decisions before purchasing a TV cabinet. First, decide on the wood species. In this regard, your primary choices are maple, brown maple, cherry, walnut, hickory, rustic hickory, rustic cherry, elm and pine wood. You can also choose quarter-sawn oak. Woodcut in a quarter-sawn fashion is more stable, has less cupping, and displays a more stark woodgrain.
What’s more, your wood choice will impact the final color of your TV cabinet. That said, you have unlimited stain color choices. One stain may produce one color and look on oak wood. But the same stain color will make the TV cabinet look quite different on a cabinet built with quarter sawn-oak wood.
Next, decide whether you need an “open” TV cabinet, or whether you want glass, speaker cloth, smoked glass, glass with mullions or wood doors. Finally, you may choose the hardware to use on your flat-screen television cabinet.
